LASIK continues to be a great choice for surgically improving distance vision. The best LASIK candidates are under age 40 with healthy eyes. After 40, the challenge is with near vision. LASIK improves vision at the horizon, however does not restore near vision for someone who already needs reading glasses or bifocals for near vision.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) can be an excellent choice for surgically improving vision after the age of 50. RLE is cataract surgery before there is a mature cataract. Modern cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in all of healthcare, and provides very good visual outcomes. The natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced by a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL). The power of the synthetic lens is carefully chosen to provide clear vision. A single vision IOL offers very precise distance vision. A multifocal IOL can enable clear vision far and near. Currently, the two leading multifocal designs are Crystalens and ReStor.
